Interim manager and interim director search for leadership gaps that cannot wait
When an executive leaves, a turnaround starts or a project outgrows the team, an interim manager steps in full time within days, runs the function and hands it over cleanly when the permanent hire arrives.
What an interim manager actually does
An interim manager is a senior executive who takes over a role full time, or close to it, for a defined period. Unlike a consultant, the interim holds real authority: they manage the team, sign off decisions within agreed limits and are accountable for results while they are in the seat. Interim directors and interim executives are the same model at different levels of seniority. Engagements typically last three to nine months.
- 01 Covers a vacancy after a resignation, illness, leave or dismissal
- 02 Leads a turnaround, restructuring or cost program with a clear end date
- 03 Stabilizes a function after an acquisition or a carve-out
- 04 Runs a critical project such as a system rollout, plant opening or market exit
- 05 Prepares the role and the team for the permanent hire, then hands over
Interim or fractional, which one do you need
Both models give you a senior leader without a permanent hire, but they solve different problems. An interim executive works close to full time for a few months because something urgent needs full attention. A fractional executive works one to three days a week for many months because the company needs senior judgment, not a full-time seat. If the role is empty and decisions are piling up, choose interim. If the role never existed and the company is growing into it, look at fractional executives. Our article on fractional vs interim executive compares cost, duration and authority in detail.
| Interim | Fractional | |
|---|---|---|
| Time commitment | Full time or close to it | 1 to 3 days a week |
| Typical duration | 3 to 9 months | 6 to 18 months |
| Main purpose | Fill a gap or lead a change | Add senior capacity part time |
| Authority | Runs the function day to day | Advises and leads selected areas |

How we verify interim executives
An interim manager gets authority over your people and budget from day one, so trust has to be established before the first conversation. Every profile passes these checks before it is matched.
- Identity check
- Work history reviewed, including previous interim mandates and their outcomes as described by the expert
- References from boards, owners or investors checked
- Certifications verified where listed
- A rate card with daily and monthly rates
- An availability calendar showing the earliest start date and commitment level
What an interim manager costs
As a general US market range, interim managers and interim directors charge roughly $1,000 to $2,500 per day, and interim C-level executives commonly charge more. Monthly arrangements are usually priced as a day rate multiplied by working days. Rates are set by each expert and shown before the first call. On ExpertMatcher you pay the expert's rate plus the platform fee of your plan, from 12 percent on Starter to 4 percent on Enterprise, instead of the 20 to 40 percent markup many interim placement firms add. The full flow is on how it works.
How quickly can an interim manager start?
Availability is part of every profile, so you see the earliest start date on the shortlist. Many interim executives keep their calendar open for exactly this kind of mandate and can start within one to three weeks after the intro call and SOW.
What is the difference between an interim manager and a consultant?
A consultant advises and delivers analysis or recommendations. An interim manager takes the job: runs the team, makes decisions within agreed limits and is accountable for results during the mandate.
Can an interim executive become our permanent hire?
Sometimes, if both sides want it. Most interim executives prefer mandates, so plan for a handover. Your SOW can include help with recruiting and onboarding the permanent successor.
How long do interim engagements usually last?
Three to nine months is typical. Turnarounds and integrations can run longer, and the SOW defines milestones and a review point so either side can extend or close the mandate.
Do interim managers work on site?
Many do, especially in operations and turnarounds. Location, on-site days and timezone are part of your match brief, so the shortlist reflects them.
How is an interim manager paid?
You pay through the platform by card or ACH at the rate set by each expert, plus the platform fee of your plan. ExpertMatcher issues the invoice and pays the expert, including 1099 handling for US experts.
